About Get Healthy Guilford
Get Healthy Guilford is Guilford County's Obesity Coalition. It is composed of more than 130 community members from 73+ agencies and organizations. Our mission is to reduce and prevent obesity by promoting policy and environmental changes that increase physical activity and healthy eating among young people. Our work is accomplished through awareness-raising, education, and advocacy. The coalition promotes a culture and environment that supports both individual and community efforts to eat smart, move more, and safely achieve a healthy weight.
The need to address obesity in Guilford County was identified in a United Way Study (2006), Focusing on What Matters. It was funded initially by a grant from the Cone Health Foundation and the grassroots effort became Get Healthy Guilford Coalition in 2007. Get Healthy Guilford is funded in part through a grant from the Y USA and the CDC as part of the Pioneering Healthy Communities Initiative. Our offices are located at the Bryan Family YMCA in Greensboro.
Get Healthy Guilford sponsored the Mayor's Challenge in 2007; the Eat Smart Move More Challenge in 2008; and the Schools Eat Smart Move More Challenge in 2009, which recognized 4 winning schools and awarded them $500 mini-grants for a school health event. Together with the YMCA, we joined with over 30 partners to sponsor Healthy Kids Day in 2009 & 2010. Get Healthy Guilford and the Guilford County Department of Public Health collaborated to sponsor the 0g Trans fats initiative in 2009-10. Over 350 restaurants and food facilities voluntarily eliminated trans fats from on-site food preparation. In October 2009, held our first fundraising event, the Tour de Health, a cycling tour of the farm and wine country of Guilford County, which is now an annual event. In March 2010, we held an Active Transportation Summit featuring guest speaker, Mark Fenton. Most recently, we held the 2010 Obesity Summit at the Proximity Hotel in Greensboro.
New agency/organization and individual members are welcome to join us at any time by attending a monthly meeting. If you would like to join, contact us atgethealthyguilford@gmail.com GetHealthyGuilford@gmail.com or call 336-478-9626.
We look forward to serving the community in 2010-11, and actively engaging all residents in taking charge of their health by eating smart and moving more.
