STATEMENT January 29, 2010
The following is a statement by Leslie Armeniox, Ph.D., LPC, ADTR, Coalition Director for Get Healthy Guilford.
Get Healthy Guilford applauds First Lady Michelle Obama’s announcement that she will lead a national initiative to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic. She has already shown that she “leads by example,” making her an excellent role model for parents and their children.
Michelle Obama already has distinguished herself as an advocate for healthy communities, where all residents can enjoy easy access to fresh affordable foods, and safe places where children can play and be physically active. In her new role, Mrs. Obama will contribute the recognition and success of thousands of local communities working to prevent childhood obesity by leveraging local resources and through the innovative approaches implemented by parents, government, educators, community advocates, corporate leaders, and others.
To fight the obesity epidemic, we must have everyone at the table. The First Lady is in a unique position to encourage and motivate us to “step up” and focus on commonsense solutions that empower families and communities to make healthy choices for their children… and themselves.
